Taking as its subject the politicized conceptual art scene in New York from the mid-1970s, Zoran Popović’s film Struggle in New York – Borba u Njujorku offers an outsider’s perspective on the internal contradictions of the art institutions in the US during the formative period of neoliberalism; at the same time, it implicitly addresses the crisis that was simultaneously taking place in Yugoslav culture, which was experiencing the conditions of increasing pressure on artistic freedoms, as well as curtailing of artists’ freedom to self-organize, exemplified in the dramatic change of direction that happened in Belgrade’s Student Cultural Center.
