THE PICKERS IN SAVA ŠUMANOVIĆ’S OEUVRE

The theme of grape harvest holds a particular place within the opus of the prominent Yugoslav and Serbian modernist painter Sava Šumanović (1896–1942). Šumanović passionately painted the motifs of ripe grapes, harvest scenes and the voyeuristic views at firm female bodies of grape pickers busy doing various jobs in the vineyard during his formative period in Zagreb and Paris until the later peaceful years in his parental home in Šid. Even his last work, which had been completed at the time he was arrested and shot in Sremska Mitrovica shortly afterwards, was the triptych painting The Pickers (1942). The aim of this paper is to analyze the important theme in the work of Sava Šumanović within a broader context, and with a special emphasis on finding new models for interpretation and “reading” of The Pickers, the painter’s “swan song”.
