Abstract

The text presents theoretical interpretations of the term new media art within the context of contemporary art, which began, in symbolic terms, in 1989 with the global change of paradigms from modern to contemporary art (T. Smith). The term new media has been broadly used to interpret contemporary artistic practices in art history and theory over the past few decades (from the 1990’s onwards). However, within the contemporary context of new media and post-media artistic practices (R. Krauss), determining a borderline separating new media from old ones has become a very slippery ground on account of some media becoming obsolescent due to continual innovations in the domain of technologies that have entered the world of art, the use of traditional media in new media art, and also to various media transfers of content. This paper explores the terminological ambiguities pertaining to the use of terms, as well as the qualities and values which, apart from the actual media tools, characterise contemporary new media art.
