Abstract

Surrounded Islands is an artwork created by the artist duo Christo and JeanneClaude in which an art intervention was made on eleven islands in Biscayne Bay in Miami. During the two-week period in May 1983 when the artwork was installed the islands were surrounded with pink floating fabric. Because of its dimensions, Surrounded Islands represent one of the biggest artworks done in pink color. This paper intends to look at different reasons for using pink in the piece by Christo and Jeanne-Claude and it looks at how the public percieved the artwork. The paper identifies the ways in which pink is used in pop culture and it analyses possible different meanings that the color pink could have added to the artwork.
