Abstract

The concept of “extended” museum and ICOM proposal of the new museum definition that resonates the values of 21st century inspire debates about the notion of contemporaneity and the place of contemporary art in the proposed structure. The position of contemporary art in the sphere of (institutionalized) collective memory, the question of how contemporaneity reshapes museums and how museums understand contemporaneity are in the focus of the text. Through the case studies of contemporary art museums in Poland and Serbia, the paper examines the echo of global dilemmas about museum – community and contemporaneity – society relationships, positions of power and instrumentalization in the processes of creation of future memories.
