LAZAR TRIFUNOVIĆ AND THE NATIONAL MUSEUM IN BELGRADE (1962–1968)

This paper deals with the recent history of the National Museum in Belgrade or, to be more accurate, the period of the 1960s with Lazar Trifunović at the helm of this institution. The explication has been founded on archival and documentary material and the analysis was centered upon the most significant results of Trifunović’s tenure as director: reorganization of the internal structure, the building’s adaptation and extension, innovations of the program and types of work, a new permanent exhibition and acquisitions, as well as the effectuation of a series of projects pertaining to exhibitions, publishing, education and protection of cultural heritage. Whit his versatile efforts in the implementation of the museum’s fundamental tasks, Lazar Trifunović has made a great contribution, not only in asserting the role and reputation of the National Museum in Belgrade in both local and international context, but also to the establishment of highly professional criteria in all aspects of museum’s activities and furtherance of the museological practice in Serbia.
